The very first all-day Margate Rock & Blues is being held in the Main Hall of Margate Winter Gardens on Saturday 19 September, bringing a stellar cast of British musical legends to the trendy Kent seaside.
Wilko Johnson, recent collaborator with The Who’s Roger Daltry and founding guitarist of Dr Feelgood, headlines a packed show that includes 60s icons, The Pretty Things, celebrating 50 years as a touring band. They’ve lost none of the raw edge that made them rivals to The Beatles and The Stones, and still feature original members, Phil May and Dick Taylor – the first Rolling Stones guitarist.
Babajack are fronted by Becky Tate and Trevor Steger, and their unique blend of Blues-Roots-Folk Fusion has made them one of the UK’s most sought-after live bands. Henri Herbert was the pianist for The Jim Jones Revue and is featured in the viral YouTube video, ‘Henri’s Boogie’ – almost 9 million views! Featuring the renowned Sonny West, The Congo Faith Healers make dirty Latin Blues and voodoo Rock ’n’ roll, falling somewhere between Tom Waits and Led Zepp.
Our host and DJ, Wendy May, was lead singer with The Boothill Foottappers, presenter of Channel 4’s The Tube with Jools Holland and Paula Yates, and host of London’s premier iconic club night, Locomotion. She’ll be playing gems from the musical vaults, including Funky, Soulful, Jazzy, Rhythm & Bluesy, Boogaloo & Ska tunes for your listening and dancing pleasure.
All acts will play their full sets. Real ales and food will be available. Ticket-holders will be wristbanded, to allow for free access in and out of the venue.
The Main Hall at Margate Winter Gardens was opened in 1911 and is decorated in the Greco-Roman style that was popular in those heady days before World War I. Legendary acts who have appeared on the same stage include Anna Pavlova, The Beatles, and Laurel & Hardy.
Come down to beautiful Margate and spend a day by the seaside. Attractions nearby include Turner Contemporary gallery, The Shell Grotto, numerous bars and restaurants, the newly restored Dreamland, and the best beaches in England. For more information about Margate, CLICK HERE.
Doors open at 3pm, and Wilko Johnson will be off stage by 9:30pm, to allow those who want to catch the last trains towards London (via Canterbury West, Ashford International, Ebbsfleet International, Faversham, Rochester, Chatham, Bromley South, and Stratford International) to do so. The rest of us can party for another 90 minutes with the Congo Faith Healers and our DJs, playing vintage R&B and 60s Soul, Ska and Reggae.
Plenty of hotel rooms at all prices are available within easy travelling distance of the venue. Click here for more details.
